Learn how computers read, classify and translate human language, and how to apply NLP to Somali text in real services such as chatbots, news and call centres.
3 modules · 9 lessons · 1 h 53 min
Understand what NLP is, how raw text is prepared, and how words are turned into numbers a computer can use.
Explore text classification, information extraction, machine translation and the language models behind modern AI tools.
Apply NLP to Somali and other low-resource languages, build a simple project step by step, and deploy it responsibly.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the branch of artificial intelligence that helps computers work with human language. It powers spell checkers, translation tools, search engines and chatbots. In this course you will learn how text is cleaned and turned into numbers, how core NLP tasks such as classification, named entity recognition and translation work, and what modern language models can and cannot do.
The course pays special attention to Somali, a low-resource language for NLP. You will see why Somali text is challenging for computers, which strategies help, and how to plan a small, responsible NLP project using real examples from news, government services and customer support.
